Unit 7 Lesson 1

Population Rates

Imagine that you own a small aquarium and keep a population of goldfish in it. (It is a small population but it is correct to call your two goldfish a population!) Imagine further that the following events occurred in the past month.

  • You start the month with two goldfish, a male and a female. At the beginning of the month, you noticed that there are eggs in the gravel at the bottom of the tank. At the end of the week, the eggs are hatched and four "baby" goldfish are swimming around in the tank.

  • During the second week, you give all of the "baby" goldfish to a friend who wants to start an aquarium.

  • You forget to put the cover on the tank after feeding the fish during the the third week. The adult male goldfish jumps out of the tank during the night. You find the fish dead in the morning.

  • During the fourth week, you decide to replace the dead male fish with another one from the pet store.

Answer each of the following questions about the events that occurred to your goldfish population during the month.

  1. What is the natality rate of your goldfish population. (Remember to include the unit of time in your answer.)

  2. What is the mortality rate of your goldfish population.

  3. What is the emigration rate of your goldfish population.

  4. What is the immigration rate of your goldfish population.

  5. What is the size of your population of goldfish at the end of the month?

  6. Has the size of your population of goldfish changed during the month?

  7. Are all of the same individual goldfish present in your population at beginning of the month still in the population at the end of the month?
